About Us

Respiratory Matters was founded in 2011 and has provided training and education to thousands of health care professionals throughout the UK.

In 2016 we were awarded the Quality Assurance Certificate from Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber.

Our mission is to improve the care and outcomes of people with respiratory disease through evidence-based, practical, high-quality education.

At Respiratory Matters, we are committed to delivering high-quality education in respiratory care. Our courses are accredited by the CPD Certification Service, ensuring they meet recognised Continuing Professional Development standards and benchmarks. This accreditation reflects the integrity, quality, and learning value of our training, aligned with global CPD requirements.

Most of our courses are delivered through our virtual learning environment (VLE), supported by live Zoom tutorials for added flexibility. We also offer face-to-face training when commissioned by the NHS for larger groups and can deliver this nationwide. All learners receive access to our e-learning content following completion of their course.

We are passionate about supporting ongoing professional development. Learners who complete our spirometry courses can access free mentorship to prepare for ARTP competency assessments and progress onto the National Spirometry Register.

Beyond education, we actively collaborate with the NHS, leading local respiratory projects and contributing to research and digital innovation within the field.

Our Founder

Respiratory Matters was founded by Sophie Toor RGN, MSc, Clinical Director and respiratory nurse specialist. Sophie’s passion for respiratory care began in 2009 following personal experiences within her family—her daughter’s asthma diagnosis and her grandfather’s COPD. These experiences shaped her vision to improve education, resources, and outcomes for patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

Alongside her leadership role, Sophie remains actively involved in clinical practice, research, and education. She leads respiratory nurse interest groups, contributes to advisory boards, and has delivered lectures at Huddersfield and Keele Universities. Her work has included involvement in national initiatives such as the 2012 National Review of Asthma Deaths and the BTS/SIGN guideline update.

Our Team

Respiratory Matters is supported by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who deliver training and provide expert tutorial support. Our administrative team ensures the smooth day-to-day running of the organisation, allowing us to maintain a high standard of service and learner experience.
